How will Brexit affect my access to the Spanish Healthcare Service?

In January 2019 the Spanish Government launched a website that outlines how Brexit will affect British Citizens living in Spanish territory.

At present al European citizens are entitled to the same healthcare that they would receive in their country of origin. A temporary stay is covered by a European Health Insurance Card (EHIC), whereas pensioners living in another country as well as relocated workers, civil servants etc are covered by the S1 form.

This situation may change after Brexit depending on the deal that is struck between the UK and the European Union.

Deal

In the case of a deal agreed on by both sides, the present coordinated Social Security regulation No. 883/2004 and No. 987/2009 will remain in force until 31st December 2020.

No deal

Different bilateral agreements will have to be made with the differing European States. The Spanish Government is working hard to ensure that Spanish citizens in the UK continue to receive access to the UK healthcare service and at the same time putting into motion a series of contingency measures to ensure that UK citizens already registered as residents in Spain continue to receive healthcare access, in the event of a no deal Brexit.
