8 Tips to protect yourself from the sun on the beach this summer

We love the sun in summer, those long days on the beach getting a bit of colour after a year of being locked in an office. But those summer rays can be harmful if we get too much of them. That is why it is so important to use sunscreen that keeps our skin safe during each exposure

The World Health Organization is very clear on the subject: “As the depletion of the ozone layer increases and the habit of sunbathing among the population of the world increases with it, the risk of developing health complications due to overexposure to UV radiation is becoming an important public health problem, ”said Dr. Lee Jong-wook, ex-Director General.

Remedying the problem is simple and it does not prevent us from enjoying the beach in summer. We only need to take a few precautions to avoid the effects of the suns harmful rays. These are some simple tips to keep in mind:

1. Avoid the midday sun

In the central hours of the day (from 12 noon to 2 p.m.) the solar radiation is much stronger so it is important to avoid exposure at this time Covering up and staying in the shade is recommended.

2. Choose the right sunscreen

Suncream creates a barrier to protect us from the harmful effects of the sun. That is why it is so important to choose a suitable product for our skin type, taking into account our phototype and the intensity of UVA rays. Using a suncream with a protection of 30 or over is highly recommended.

3. Apply the suncream well

It is better to use too much rather than too little and apply abundant suncream, an adult should use approximately 35 grams of cream in each application. It is important that all the skin surface is well covered.

4. Protect all parts of the body

The face, lips, eyes and scalp are also susceptible to sunburn or the effects of the sun. Use a specific face cream, a lip balm with sunscreen, sunglasses and a hat.

5. Apply suncream before going to the beach

For the cream to take effect and penetrate the skin, it is important to apply the sunscreen 20 or 30 minutes before sunbathing. Always follow the instructions that appear on the product.

6. Repeat applications

You should reapply suncream after a swim or every two hours.  It is important that you are always protected.

7. Use clothing as a form of protection

There is no better barrier from the sun than a physical one such as covering up with clothing. Depending on the material from which it is made, it will be more or less resistant; there are t-shirts and pants on the market that protect from UV rays.

8. Drink plenty of water

Exposure to the sun produces dehydration so it is essential to drink abundant quantities of liquids.
